The All or Nothing Mindset

How It Hurts and How We Can Heal

If you’ve ever felt stuck between “I’m doing great” and “I’ve failed completely,” you’re not alone.

Many of us carry thinking patterns that quietly shape how we see ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. Some of these patterns are conscious — others operate beneath the surface, influencing our reactions, decisions, and emotional wellbeing without us realizing it.

One of the most common (and damaging) patterns is what we call the all-or-nothing mindset.

What is the All-or-Nothing Mindset?

The all-or-nothing mindset leaves little room for nuance, compassion, or growth. It tells us things must be perfect or worthless, right or wrong, success or failure — with nothing in between.

Over time, this way of thinking can:

  • Increase anxiety and self-criticism

  • Strain relationships and communication

  • Fuel shame, burnout, and emotional exhaustion

  • Make healing feel impossible or out of reach

For survivors of religious or spiritual abuse, this mindset is often reinforced by rigid belief systems and harmful messaging about worth, obedience, and identity.

A Trauma-Informed Perspective

A Trauma-Informed Perspective

As a licensed therapist — and someone who has personally navigated this mindset — I created this session to help you recognize, understand, and gently challenge all-or-nothing thinking.

This is not about forcing positive thinking or “fixing” yourself.

It’s about learning to:

  • Notice these patterns with curiosity instead of judgment

  • Understand where they came from

  • Develop tools to respond with flexibility, self-trust, and compassion
